With a background in the skin, she attended Make-up Designory of Burbank California in 2008 and completed the Master Course. Cat lives in Hollywood making her way as a freelance Make-up artist but plans on joining a special effects lab soon to pursue more special effects projects.

1. For the people who don’t know you, who are you and what do you do?

My name is Cat Calico and I am a special effects makeup artist, fabricator, sculptor, painter, and scenic. A lot of different things within the industry.

2. How did you become involved with the entertainment industry?

I started out as a trailer makeup artist and started working in film where I found special effects makeup and within special effects makeup, all those other fields.

3. What are some projects that you worked on in the past?

I have worked on a lot of horror movies in the past and now I am working a lot with Anna Akana. Anna started her career on Youtube and now she acts, writes, produces and we make a lot of content together. Before Anna, a lot of indie horror.

4. What do you love most about what you do?

I probably love the fact that no day is the same. Sometimes I am on set doing special effects or beauty and sometimes I am at home building props making things. It is a really weird experience to not have a schedule, a nine-to-five and sometimes that can become stressful because you never know how much money you will make but if you love what you do, everything else will come after that.

5. What has been your biggest accomplishment so far?

It is very hard to pick only one so I will talk about a few. Some of the work that I have done with Anna has been very meaningful, for example when we had to go to Utah for the filming “Youth & Consequences”, that was a pretty big deal but for me, I have always enjoyed the smaller accomplishments more like the things that I get to make, from a skillset standpoint. There are the things that I make and spend a lot of time on and it usually is the things that most people might not notice.

6. Who are some people that have inspired you throughout your career?

The person that has inspired me throughout my career is my mom. She is an artist as well and a hard worker and I definitely got my work ethic from her. A lot of this industry is not giving up and there are a lot of talented people who didn’t make it as far as they could just because they get scared that maybe they won’t get as far as they can.

7. What is one project that you would love to work on?

I would love to get involved in a Guillermo Del Toro film because his creature designs are always so amazing so that would be pretty cool. I don’t care too much about names or the project as much as of the contents of the project so just anything that will make me creatively satisfied. I sometimes work on passion projects where the pay is not so big but I just want to be a part of it.

8. What is one trend that you will hope will last for a long time?

I do feel like there are certain trends in society, especially in fashion right now of acceptance. I like that fact that instead of embracing this one ideal image of how we should all look like, we are branching out and accepting people for their own looks and I think that is really important. I cannot stand the way a lot of people are trying to be one thing, even if that is not at all who they are. Not everyone is going to be blonde hair with blue eyes and I think it is a good thing because everyone is beautiful the way they are and we should not try and change who we are for the sake of others.

9. What show have you binge-watched recently and loved?

I accidentally came across a new Netflix show called “Maniac”. Honestly, I was using it for background just to have some cool imagery while I was working on my projects but I got sucked right into it. I thought it was really charming with a cool message and it was also very cool to look at.

10. Do you have one quote or saying that you live by?

I actually have a whole set of philosophies that I live by. My left arm is dedicated to tattoos on my philosophies of life. My first tattoo is the Latin motto of my family crest and it basically translates to “ through my own suffering, I help those in need” and I think that is the beginning of all my philosophies, not that I had a terrible life or anything but, like everyone, I have had my own battles and things that needed to be overcome. I do tend to become a therapist for my friends. I like talking people through their problems.

11. Do you have a hidden talent?

I don’t dance but, if I get too drunk, I start dancing like a Latin girl. I don’t really know if it is a talent but I thought it would be funny to share.

12. If you could say something to your younger self, what would it be?

You don’t have to be like everyone else because you are your own person. I wish I didn’t spend the amount of time that I did in the past trying to fit in or to please a social standard instead of focusing on myself and on what I need. It’s ok to be different.

13. What plans do you have in mind for the future?

I think I want to Segway my profession as a special effects makeup artist into an artist because I want to widen the opportunities and things that I can do on a set. You also can’t be on set forever. It is a crazy life and I don’t want to do that forever. I just want to be able to be a part of.

14. What are some causes that are dear to your heart?

Anything animal relates, mental health, suicide awareness and just helping women fairly.

Thank you so much to Cat for agreeing to the interview. You can check her and her amazing work out on:
